Our Mount Toubkal trek is an exciting way to experience the Atlas Mountains, with the option of a two or three day journey to approach, summit, and descend the highest peak in North Africa. Starting from the mountain village of Imlil, the trek follows scenic trails through the High Atlas before reaching the refuge below the summit.
This is a guided experience, where you’ll be accompanied by a certified mountain guide and local muleteer who will support you throughout the climb. With breathtaking views, traditional Berber hospitality, and the rewarding challenge of reaching 4,167m, this trek offers an unforgettable adventure in the heart of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains.

Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech – Imlil (1,740m) – Toubkal Refuge (3,207m)
Your adventure begins with a morning transfer from Marrakech to the mountain village of Imlil, located in the High Atlas Mountains approximately 90 minutes from the city. After meeting your mountain guide and support team, the trek begins along the scenic Mizane Valley.
The trail passes through the traditional Berber village of Aremd, the largest settlement in the valley, where terraced farming and stone houses line the hillsides. Continuing along mule tracks through the valley, the route gradually ascends towards the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, an important spiritual site that attracts both pilgrims and trekkers.
From here the trail continues higher into the Atlas Mountains, climbing steadily through rugged mountain terrain. By the afternoon you will reach the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 metres, located at the base of Mount Toubkal. After dinner you can relax and prepare for the summit attempt the following morning.
Day 2: Toubkal Refuge – Mount Toubkal Summit (4,167m) – Imlil – Marrakech
An early start before sunrise begins the ascent towards the summit of Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. The route climbs above the refuge across rocky slopes and scree fields as the sun rises over the High Atlas Mountains.
Although the terrain is challenging in places, the views along the way are spectacular. Reaching the summit at 4,167 metres is a truly rewarding moment, offering panoramic views across the Atlas Mountains, the Marrakech plains, and towards the Sahara on clear days.
After spending time at the summit, you descend back to the refuge before continuing down the valley towards Imlil. From here, your driver will transfer you back to Marrakech in the late afternoon.
If you’d prefer to take the trek at a more relaxed pace and enjoy extra time in the mountains, a 3-day Mount Toubkal trek option is also available.
What To Expect
Climbing Mount Toubkal is a rewarding adventure that combines spectacular mountain scenery with a glimpse into traditional Berber life in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. The trek begins in the village of Imlil and follows well-used mountain trails through valleys, villages, and rugged alpine terrain before reaching the refuge below the summit.
The paths are generally straightforward but can be rocky and uneven in places, especially at higher altitude. A reasonable level of fitness and comfort with walking uphill for several hours is recommended. The pace is steady and designed to allow time for breaks, photos, and enjoying the incredible surroundings.
Accommodation during the trek is typically in a mountain refuge near the base of Mount Toubkal, where you’ll stay the night before your summit attempt. These refuges offer a warm and social atmosphere where trekkers from around the world gather before climbing North Africa’s highest peak.
Meals are simple, hearty, and designed to keep you fuelled for the trek, often including traditional Moroccan dishes. Your experienced local guide and support team will accompany you throughout the journey, ensuring your safety and helping you make the most of the experience.
Reaching the summit of Mount Toubkal at 4,167 metres is an unforgettable moment. On clear days the views stretch across the High Atlas Mountains, the plains of Marrakech, and even as far as the Sahara.
Travel Dates & Seasonal Information
This trip can run throughout the year, giving you the flexibility to plan your Mount Toubkal trek on dates that suit you. Exact departure dates can be arranged depending on availability and conditions in the Atlas Mountains.
